Well, a vertical is much better for transmitting than receiving.
It has a low angle of radiation for transmitting, but the same pattern
also results in picking up a lot of local QRM.
The Beverage is an antenna designed to be nonresonant, with a high-Z
output, effectively. I suppose you could rig up a matching network
to transmit from one, but it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

You can transmit on a beverage but the gound losses are awful.

Hi, by wife and I will be visiting my aunt and uncle in West Orange,
and info on a good local West Orange repeater would be appreciated.
They're up the hill from the old Edison museum, not that far from the
area where the Edison house is. I remember there being a Path Mark mar
et and a Christian radio station nearby that bled all over EVERYTHING,
but this was back in 1989.
Anyway, I will have a pair of HTX-202s, one for her and one for me,
and I just wanted something to keep in touch when we are apart.
SOmething local and quiet is ideal. Any 2 meter repeater info for the
area will be MUCH appreciated. By the way, if there are any good open
2m repeaters in midtwn Manhattan, around 47th st and 7th ave, that would
be appreciated too.
Please reply to davev@atkc.com or dkerk@ctp.org

You are exhibiting much correctness, sir. For the most reasonable
explanationof this that I've ever heard, allow me to quote unto you
from David Feldman's "Why Do Dogs Have Wet Noses...?"
in which he quotes himself in "Who Put the Butter in Butterfly?":
"One of the main definitions of -way- is "a route or course that is
or may be used to go from one place to another". New York's Robert
Moses dubbed his "route or course that was used to go from one place
to another" -parkway- because it was lined with trees and lawns to
simulate the beauty of a park. The -driveway-, just as a -highway-,
a -freeway-, or a -parkway-, is a path for automobiles. The driveway is a
path, a -way- between the street and a house or a garage."
We do indeed call ours the Garden State Parkway, although waiting at
the barrier tools that slow traffic to a crawl, it is sometimes like
sitting in a driveway.
For reasons beyond my comprehension, driving on -parkways- does
indeed seem to be a Northeastern thing. Others that spring to mind
are the Merrit, Sprain, and the Saw Mill (River). When one says
"The Parkway" in NY Metro however, it usually means the GSP.
BTW, I highly recommend Mr. Feldman's Imponderables books for fun
and dispute resolution. They include:
"Why Do clocks Run Clockwise..?"
"Who Put the Butter in Butterfly..?"
"When Do Fish Sleep...?"
"Why Do Dogs Have Wet Noses...?"
and, of course, the original "Imponderables..."

I see a lot of posts like this. So can I ask, in what is meant to
be a completely non-inflammatory way, what attracted you to amateur
radio in the first place?
In my case, I was an SWL for a year or so as a teenager, and decided
that CW DXing was what I wanted to do, so I got a license and have been
doing it ever since. I knew what I was getting into, and while I do a
few other things beside DXing, they alone would not be enough to keep
me interested in the hobby.
When I got on the air, it was just as I imagined it would be - there
were no real surprises and I didn't get tired of it after two months.
Getting a license doesn't magically make you, or anyone else, a more
interesting person. I assume that you listened to hams for some time
before going to the trouble of getting a license - has anything changed
since then?
By your own admission, you're not interested in contests or DXing, and
you don't like "ham-radio talk" - what would make it more interesting
for you?

operated there a few times last year. The Queen was sold, I understand,

I believe that there is a photo and some info about how to operate

Nice ideas re piping the mobile's audio into the car stereo's system via the
CD port. The problem is that you can't be monitoring the mobile while listening
to the car's radio.
Anyway you can merge the two without degrading the already marginal car stereo
system? (i.e. can't hijack one of the speakers...)

Wish I'd thought of that one! I just snipped the end and
